Why have a food supplement?
When babies start to grow, breast milk alone is not enough. We should let the child eat food other than mother's milk so that the child has sufficient intake of essential nutrients and also stimulates the functioning of the digestive system. But the problem troubling parents is what food supplement to give and when is the child ready to take supplements. In general, children from 4 months are ready to take food supplements but we should look at a child's readiness from various aspects:
- The baby's weight should be twice that since birth as the baby needs more and more food.
- Readiness of the child's physical attributes - when the child can raise the neck or move the head on his/her own.
- When a child starts to play with toys or puts a finger in the mouth indicating he/she is ready to learn new things.
- When a child leans towards food with open mouth and turns away when done eating indicating the child is able to clearly express when he/she is hungry and when full.
- Readiness of the child's mouth - for example, opening the mouth when a spoon touches the lip or the child moves nearer the food when offered.
- When you try light food like mashed rice in water, the child is able to eat well for about a week indicating the child is getting used to having food supplements, you can give other foods like egg yolk or ground liver.
How many food supplement meals a day should a child take?
The staple food of children from birth to age 4 months is breast milk because they need protein, fat, vitamins and minerals to assist in their growth development. After the first 4 months or more they are able to eat food such as meat, eggs, fresh vegetables, good food supplements for children at this age. The number of food supplement meals a day a child should have depends on the age of the child as follows:
- 0-3 months of age, your child should have breast milk or milk formula 6-8 times a day without need for food supplements.
- 3-6 months of age, your child should have breast milk or milk formula 5-6 times a day with one serving of food supplement.
- 6-9 months of age, your child should have breast milk or milk formula 4-5 times a day with 2 servings of food supplement.
- 9-12 months of age, your child should have breast milk or milk formula 3-4 times a day with 3 servings of food supplement.
